2013

Looking for textiles, spinners, natural dyers and weavers. And most of all, learning about traditional 'Harris Tweed', and the history of their natural dyes and weaving process.
We've met a lot of nice, hardworking craftsmen and saw beautiful nature.
Thank you all for the fine talking and exchanging of ideas, dyeing recipes and addresses of other artists or shearers, markets, wool mills...
All this, nature and people gave me inspiration and power to move on with my work.
I hope you'll enjoy this textile travel!!

Coming from Normandy (France) by ferry, we arrive in Rosslare, Ireland.
Travelling to western Ireland we visit the beautiful 'Ring of Kerry'.
In Kilmare I spot the first 'Aran' knitted sweaters.
We also encounter 'peat' or 'turf' which is still widely used in the area.
We're surprised they still use it for heating.
Crossing the river 'Shannon' we camp in Doolin and enjoy a real 'pub' with life Irish music!
Next day the well known 'Cliffs of Moher' and National Park (NP) 'the Burren' (Karst limestone plateau) are on the agenda.
The colors, stones and structures of the little walls are inspiring.

The beautiful Connemara region, with peatland, small lakes and mountains brings us to Leenane.
We visit 'The Sheep and Wool Centre' (www.sheepandwoolcentre.com).

We meet Joe Joyce (www.joycecountysheepdogs.ie) who gave us a sheepdog- and sheep shearing demonstration. This was a chance for me since I was looking for a raw fleece of the Blackface to be used for felting. I even could choose my own sheep and helped with the shearing.

Nadien bezochten we het (Sheep and Wool Museum'.
Afterwards we spend some time in 'The Sheep & Wool Museum'. Their mission is to raise awareness and foster an appreciation of the traditional sheep and wool industry in Connemara.
Patricia works in the museum, spinning and dyeing with plants, educating...
It was very pleasant meeting her. We had a good talk exchanging dye recipes and ideas.
My intrest in dyeing with lichen, especially the ones traditionally used in 'Harris Tweed' was in good hands.
Patricia told me about 'crottle' and also showed me other lichen growing on trees and rocks.
Her mysterious pots had my full attention.
Thanks a lot Patricia for you're kindness and the addresses you gave me of craftsmen in the area.

In Donegal we went to the 'Donegal Craft Village' to meet hand weaver Clare O'Presco at her studio. She works on a gigantic traditional 100 year old Donegal loom. After graduating in woven textile design, Clare full filled her dream to create modern Donegal tweeds.
We talked about natural dyes which she remembered from her education, but since she's trying to make a living out of it, she's a full time weaver, alas, with no time left for dyeing.
We had a great time talking. She showed me threads made from silk and seaweed, I didn't even know it existed.

Driving to our next address, we enjoy the scenic route on the peninsula of St.John's Point, for Cyndi Graham's hand weaving studio. Her wonderful atelier, in a old thatched cottage, is very cosy here she works on an old loom, previously owned by her father.
She produces a range of handwoven goods from hats and scarves to clothing and wallhangings.
I admire also her old 'Harris Tweed' loom, which she wants to restore for weaving.
She's also trying to make a living out of her weaving.
In this area there's no industry since long ago. A lot of young people, and all her friends migrated away from Ireland looking for work.
She stayed and decided to weave, which she learned from her father.
More people are trying to do handicrafts to survive.
A lot of old looms were sold to India, now some artists are trying to buy them back.
Our journey goes on and we spot sheep everywhere.
The Woollen mil in Kilcar 'Studio Donegal' sells woven and knitted products from local sheep.
They have also a weaving workshop with huge looms making Tweed.

At Glencolumcille we visit another wool shop and find it remarkable to see a lot of peatland (turf) in the area. With no trees we understand that people use peat instead of wood, although it's a lot of work digging and has to dry a long time.

At the 'Folk Village' (a local museum) in Glencolmcille (www.glenfolkvillage.com) we find out more about peat.
With the ashes of burned peat, people used to dye their wool!! Old recipes given from mother to daughter tell that the colors can be light brown, red or orange, depending on the plants and soil in the turf.
The lady at the museum let use take ashes from the stove and gave us some dried peat. Now I can try some experimenting at home...

The beautiful road leads us further to Ardara. Asking for a campsite, we learn in a wool shop about sheep in the area. Because most of the sheep here have very coarse wool and a high micron, the wool is only suitable for tapestry. These days all wool is blended with fleeces from Australia and New Zealand to make threads for knitting (Aran Sweaters) and weaving.

After this remarkable day we slept at a campsite near the beach.
We continue via Londonderry and end up in the North at 'Giant's Causeway', a geological wonder steeped in legend and folklore. At last we take the ferry to Scotland.
