TRANSHUMANCE

At 9:00 am we are on a meadow, just outside the small village, where the shepherds all stand at the 'buvette' with a chicken leg, crust bread and a glass of red wine!
Large white Shepherd dogs are all ready and we get even a word of explanation.
All of a sudden the sheep flock arrives and we leave under a cloudy sky.

Never thought sheep run that fast, it's hard to stay near the herd and certainly not uphill. The first 5.5 km go by 'departementale' (constant climbing) and the whole group of hikers is falling apart.
We are looking for our own pace and on the road are all kinds of ' Tableaux ' made of cardboard, with depictions of the former rural life.

On a bridge at an old factory there is apparently a stop and everyone is waiting. The herd comes from a different path and storms past us along a narrow road and bridge, with dogs and shepherds.
The small road becomes a path and is narrow and we're climbing steadily another 3 km to the top.
The clouds are gone and it's really hot now and we're sweating.

The scenery is beautiful here, especially when we finally arrive at the ' Cirque de la Plagne ' the final goal, where the sheep are spreading out and will stay throughout the summer.

At a small mountainriver we rest, while the sheep are grazing around us.
On large open fires the sheperds and their friends are grilling lambsausages
The 'repas' tastes great. First a plate of 'charcuterie' from the local butcher, then the sausage, some local red wine and a chunk of Basque goatcheese. All with the great French bread.

With rigid muscles but in good spirits we drive half an hour further to the transhumance of Bethmale. According to the programme, the horses left early in the morning for a long ride.
The sheep follow a different path, for a very long trek, we pass them on the road.

We park at the ' lac de Bethmale ' and are just in time to follow the white cows and calves 'race Gasconne'. These animals have apparently strong legs that can handle a difficult trip on bad roads.
The hike is 7 km up. Happyly cows are slow, we remain behind the shepherds who drive the last or stray animals together.
It is a beautiful sunny day, in group it's easier to walk and the spirits remain high, despite all the leaking sweat.

We barely have time to catch our breath ,or the Flock is coming and rushes to the waterfall. Every year 2500 sheep stay here, which roam freely and independently over the mountains, always in search of still more tender grass.
' Tarasconnaises ' are mountain sheep and the ' Castillonnaises ' that are smaller, quickly adapt to any circumstances.

We just want to go listen to a local folk group who sing 'chants Pyrénées' when the horses come storming in.
With a group of riders at the rear, the 80 horses are racing quickly but very tired, to the river to drink. Then they mix with the grazing cows.
Strong and elegant they call 'le cheval de Mérens', the black horse of the Pyrenees or
'prince noir de l' Ariège'. Also 'le petit cheval de Castillon' or, 'la mountagnole'.

We listen to the folkmusic and study the bizarre clothing of the musicians, especially the special clogs with dangerous points! They tell us its a habit from the time of the Saracens. If a man wanted to marry he had to cut a 'point clog' himself and offer it to the father of the girl.

Then it's time for lunch, 'repas pastoral'. The sheperds tend to the open fires. We start with a thick meatsoup. There is a lot of winedrinking and somebody says that cooking a great hights gives more taste to food. Have a look at the menu, the grilled sheepmeat is tender, there is even a buttercup for the grilled potato. Dessert is local sheepscheese and applepie.
The mood is great, everywhere people are picknicking on the hills with fantastic views.
The singers and musicians are in full swing, people sing along with old songs.
Let's have another glass of red wine !

A few days later on a campsite I can dig up a bit madder root (Rubia tinctorum) it grows just here among the hedges and around the trees. It's a root already known as red Dyestuff since middle ages. The leaf looks like galium aparine, the root branches underground and gives in the dye bath a bright stone red color.
