Canarische eilanden: Lanzarote
maart 2010
We know cochenille lice, originally from Mexico, from food, pharmacy and cosmetics.
This lice was only known in Europe after the discovery of America.
About 1835 it was brought to Lanzarote and grown there because of the beautiful climate, especially in the villages of Mala and Guatiza.
The Canary Islands used to be a stopover for ships on their way too and from 'the New World'.
Splendid crimson, pink and lilac purple we can find in natural dyeing with a lice !
With different mordants you can make a huge color gamma from light lavender, purple to bright carmine.

Lanzarote is een heel droog, vulkanisch eiland.
Lanzarote is a very dry, arid, vulcanic island.

The lice is cultivated on the nopal cactus. This area is full of it, they call it 'blood of the nopal'.
After harvesting, the grown females are dried in the sun.
We stayed in Mala, full with cactus fields covered with cochenille.
Of course it was difficult not to take some of the lice, to use at home as didactic material.

The lice are still fresh, we dry them in a small glasshouse (a plastic container).
The female lice stay in the same place their whole life, while the males have wings and fly around.
Very soon we found male lice flying around in our rented cottage !
The females dried very quickly in the warm spring sun.
We took them home, and were glad the customs at the airport did not look in our bags...try to explain this white powder would be difficult!

I bought a larger quantity of lice from a regular cochenille farmer.
He filtered out the small ones and after weighing, a deal was made.

Later we learned that the nopal fields are property of the Milana cooperative.
The cooperative tries to keep the breeding of cochenille from disappearing, through courses and knowledge, targeting local women.
It is also a scientific project, with some help from the European Union.
Check out www.tinamala.com
The project is little known and their is still a lot of work to do.
Not only on paper, but the job of harvesting by hand the tiny lice on cacti is laborious!
This project could use some more pr as their are no tourists.
In the small museum all signs were only in Spanish and only every now and then schoolchildren come to visit (and learn to paint with this great bright red color).
